Abstract

Abstract: The magnetic susceptibilities of the carbides Ln3C4 (Ln ≡ Ho-Lu) and Y3B0.2C3.8 with Sc3C4-type structure were determined between 2 and 300 K with a SQUID magnetometer at magnetic flux densities between 0.02 and 5 T. Y3B0.2C3.8 and Ln3C4 are Pauli paramagnetic, while the other rare earth carbides show Curie-Weiss behaviour with magnetic moments slightly lower than those of the free Ln3+ ions. Ho3C4 and Er3C4 order antiferromagnetically with Néel temperatures of TN = 11 ± 1 and 8 ± 1 K respectively, while no magnetic order was observed for Tm3C4 and Yb3C4 down to 2 K.
